Rembrandt

Rembrandt painted more than one version of the Genesis 22 story.  The first, called The Sacrifice of Abraham, was painted around 1637.  The second, entitled the Sacrifice of Isaac, is an etching done in 1655.  In the time between these two depictions, Rembrandt's own son died.  Follow these links to see the images:

The story told in Genesis 22 is known as the "Akedah" or "binding of Isaac".  The philosophical, ethical and theological issues of this story have been tackled by many including: Kirkegaard, Levinas, Wolterstorff, and many many Jewish and Muslim scholars.

The Sacrifice of Abraham

Fermentation is back for Spring!  For the next few weeks we will be discussing the concept of God "testing" us.  We will look at the Sacrifice of Abraham in Genesis 22, portions of the book of Job, and the hardening of Pharoah's heart when Moses asks for the Israelites to be freed.

Meet at Cheapside Bar and Grill at 7:45pm.
